Lesson Plan: Basic Science and Technology
Topic: Living and Non-Living Things III
Grade: Junior Secondary 1
Duration: 40 minutes
Objective:
- Students will be able to identify and classify living and non-living things.
- Students will understand the characteristics that differentiate living things from non-living things.
Materials Needed:
- Chart paper
- Markers
- Pictures of different living and non-living things (real objects, printed images)
- Activity worksheets
- Whiteboard and markers
Introduction (10 minutes):
1. Start with a brief review of previous lessons on living and non-living things.
2. Ask students to give examples of living things and non-living things from their surroundings.
3. Introduce today’s objective: "Today, we are going to learn more about living and non-living things and how to classify them correctly."
Direct Instruction (15 minutes):
1. Characteristics of Living Things:
- Movement: Living things can move on their own.
- Respiration: Living things breathe to stay alive.
- Sensitivity: Living things react to their environment.
- Growth: Living things grow and develop.
- Reproduction: Living things can produce offspring.
- Excretion: Living things get rid of waste.
- Nutrition: Living things need food to obtain energy.
2. Characteristics of Non-Living Things:
- Non-living things do not breathe, grow, or reproduce.
- Non-living things do not have metabolic processes.
- Non-living things do not respond to stimuli.
3. Use the whiteboard to list the characteristics of living and non-living things. Show images or real objects representing living and non-living things and ask students to identify which category each belongs to.
Activity (10 minutes):
1. Divide students into small groups.
2. Distribute pictures of various objects (both living and non-living) to each group.
3. Give each group chart paper and markers.
4. Instruct groups to classify the objects into two categories: living and non-living, and list the characteristics that helped them make their decisions.
5. Have each group present their findings to the class.
Conclusion (5 minutes):
1. Recap the key points from the lesson:
- Characteristics of living things: movement, respiration, sensitivity, growth, reproduction, excretion, nutrition.
- Characteristics of non-living things: absence of life processes.
2. Reinforce the importance of being able to distinguish between living and non-living things in everyday life.
3. Answer any remaining questions from the students.
Assessment:
- Observe group participation and their ability to correctly classify objects during the activity.
- Collect and review the group charts to ensure understanding of the characteristics of living and non-living things.
Homework:
- Ask students to find five living things and five non-living things at home or in their surroundings. They should write a brief description of each item, highlighting why it is classified as living or non-living based on the characteristics discussed in class.
Note:
- Adapt the lesson based on the specific needs and understanding levels of the students.
- Use additional visual aids or hands-on activities to reinforce learning as needed.
